After I finished my A-Levels in Münster, I ran through an apprenticeship as a carpenter, where I wanted to learn more about woodworking processes. Within the block lessons in vocational school (BKB Beckum) I had my first lessons in design theory. The goal of this course was to design your own journeyman’s peace, traditionally a piece of furniture, that every graduate has to plan and construct on their own. It had to feature at least 10 difficulty points in a guideline, called the Hamburger Modell. There you get e.g. two points for a moving part in the piece or one point for the use of non-wooden elements, such as ropes, metal, glass or light sources.
I thought about my personal needs and about what piece of furniture could have a place in all of my future homes. I was thinking about creating an inviting place to work or to make music for myself. I wanted to design a place, where I could either sit or stand, to work on a laptop or play the guitar. From the beginning on, I was thinking about oak wood as the basic material. I planned an oil finish with a dark and a bright colorgrade, to create a contrast, separating key parts from each other.
To motivate the students, there is an yearly design competition between the graduates within the districts. I finished first in my district (Warendorf).
